Plan types

Three ways to buy gas. The difference is who carries the risk.

Tap a plan type to see how the rate behaves, what it costs to leave, and which household it suits.

Fixed rate — the winter budget plan

Your supply rate per therm is locked for the whole term, usually 6 to 24 months. When January turns cold and market prices spike, your rate doesn't move.

  • Same rate every monthOnly your usage changes the bill, not the price.
  • Renewal notice before the term endsSuppliers must tell you before a plan rolls over to a variable rate.
  • Early termination fee appliesTypically a flat amount if you leave before the term ends — we show it before you enroll.

Variable rate — flexible, but it moves

A month-to-month rate that tracks the wholesale market. It often starts below fixed offers, then climbs in heating season when demand rises. No contract holds you in.

  • No contract, no exit feeLeave or switch whenever you want, with your next meter read.
  • Intro rates can expireCheck whether the first-month price is promotional before you enroll.
  • Best for short staysRentals, homes on the market, or testing a supplier before committing.

Renewable gas — same supply, offset or matched

The gas in your pipes is identical. The supplier matches your usage with renewable natural gas certificates or carbon offsets, usually on a longer term at a small premium.

  • Long rate lockOften 24 months, which smooths out two heating seasons.
  • Ask how it's sourcedRNG certificates and carbon offsets are not the same thing — the supplier must disclose which.
  • Not available everywhereOffered in select territories only. We'll tell you if yours is one.

What a lower rate is actually worth to you

Move the two sliders to match your household. The gap between your utility's default rate and a fixed supplier rate is the only saving worth chasing.

A gas-heated family home typically lands between 700 and 1,000 therms a year.

This is the “price to compare” printed on your gas bill.

Deregulation, briefly

You choose who supplies the gas. Your utility still delivers it.

In deregulated states your bill splits into two parts. Delivery stays with your local utility — the pipes, the meter, the emergency crew, the regulated charge. Supply is the gas itself, and that part is open to competition.

Switching supplier means no new equipment, no trench in the yard, no gap in service. Most switches take effect on your next meter read, and your utility keeps sending the bill.

  • Emergencies never changeSmell gas? It's still your utility's emergency line, 24 hours a day.
  • Compare against the price to compareYour utility publishes a default supply rate. That's the number a supplier offer has to beat.

Is switching worth it

Honest answer: it depends on your household

Three situations we see every week, and what we usually tell people in each one.

Owner · high winter usage

Probably yes — lock a fixed rate

If you heat with gas and burn 800+ therms a year, a cold January on a variable rate hurts. Locking a rate before heating season is the whole point of shopping.

Best plan type12–24 month fixed
Watch forEarly exit fee
Renter · low usage

Maybe — keep it flexible

If gas only runs your stove and water heater, the savings are smaller and a contract can outlast your lease. Month-to-month keeps you free to move.

Best plan typeVariable, no contract

Check your renewal date first

The expensive month is the one after a fixed term quietly rolls onto a variable rate. Find that date on your bill, then shop about six weeks before it.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Who is Gas Provider Companies?

We're an independent comparison service operated by Web Pulse LLC. We work with licensed natural gas suppliers and home service providers to show what's available at your address, and we help you enroll with the one you pick. We don't supply gas and we don't bill you.

Will my gas service be interrupted if I switch?

No. Your local utility keeps delivering gas through the same pipes and reading the same meter. Switching changes only the supply portion of your bill, usually starting on your next meter read date.

Fixed or variable — which should I pick?

A fixed rate locks your price per therm for the term, which makes winter bills predictable. A variable rate can be cheaper in mild months but moves with the market. If a cold-weather spike would strain your budget, fixed is usually the safer choice.

Are there fees for switching?

Enrolling through us is free. Some suppliers charge an early termination fee if you leave a fixed contract early, and some plans carry a monthly service charge. Those terms are shown before you enroll — ask an agent to read them with you if anything is unclear.

How do I know a supplier is legitimate?

Check that the supplier is registered with your state's public utility commission, review complaint records there, and read the terms of service in full. Every supplier listed here is licensed in the territory where it appears.

What do I need to enroll?

A recent gas bill. It carries your utility account number and your annual usage, which is what determines whether a plan actually saves you money.

Who handles billing and emergencies afterwards?

Your local utility. Billing normally stays consolidated on your existing utility bill with the new supply rate shown as a line item. Gas leaks and service emergencies always go to your utility's emergency number.

How is my personal information used?

Your ZIP code is used to check availability, and your details are used to place an enrollment with the supplier you choose. See our Privacy Policy for the full detail.
